Why Mauritius for Golf?

Mauritius punches well above its size as a golf destination. A small island — roughly 65km × 45km — it hosts six major courses, several designed or consulted on by world-class architects, all within striking distance of 5-star resort accommodation. The climate is ideal: warm year-round, with the dry season (May–October) offering reliable mornings with low humidity before trade winds build in the afternoon.

What sets Mauritius apart is context. Most courses have at least partial ocean exposure — the Indian Ocean forms a backdrop to the 18th at Heritage, the east-coast lagoon wraps around Anahita, and the Links course at Constance Belle Mare Plage borders the open ocean directly. Combined with immaculate conditioning and resort-standard clubhouse facilities, these courses routinely feature in Indian Ocean golf rankings above alternatives in nearby islands.

The other advantage is convenience. Unlike golfing destinations where accommodation is remote from the course, Mauritius's top resorts are built around or directly adjacent to their golf layouts. Stay at Constance Belle Mare Plage and your room is a golf buggy ride from the first tee. Heritage Awali guests step out of the resort onto the Heritage Golf Club fairways. This integration is rare outside of purpose-built golf estates in Scotland or Spain.

The Major Golf Courses in Mauritius

1
Constance Belle Mare Plage — The Links & The Legend
Belle Mare, East Coast · 36 holes combined
East Coast 36 holes Links + Parkland Guests & visitors

The island's most complete golf facility. Two distinct 18-hole courses share the estate: The Links is an exposed seaside layout with ocean views on multiple holes and trade-wind exposure that adds a strategic dimension rare in tropical golf; The Legend is more sheltered, a parkland design winding through mature trees with tighter fairways. Both are in immaculate condition year-round. A dedicated Golf Academy with TrackMan technology makes it the top choice for golfers wanting to combine a holiday with serious tuition. Non-hotel guests are welcome with advance booking; resort guests receive preferential tee-time access and rates.

2
Anahita Golf Club — Ernie Els Design
Grand River South East, East Coast · 18 holes
East Coast 18 holes Lagoon-side parkland Resort guests first

Designed by Ernie Els and opened in 2010, Anahita is arguably the most visually striking course on the island. Twelve of the eighteen holes play alongside or directly over the east-coast lagoon, with the turquoise water in play on several fairways. The course rewards accuracy over power — those who play too aggressively towards the lagoon pay a heavy price. Par 72, measuring 6,612 metres from the back tees. Accessed primarily through Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita and Anahita Golf & Spa Resort; visiting players are accommodated based on availability, and advance booking (2–3 days minimum in season) is essential. The 18th hole, a par-5 finishing alongside the lagoon with resort villas visible across the water, is among the most photographed in the Indian Ocean.

3
Heritage Golf Club
Bel Ombre, South Coast · 36 holes
South Coast 36 holes Tropical parkland Guests & visitors

Set within the 1,300-hectare Heritage Nature Reserve on the south coast, the Heritage Golf Club offers 36 holes of tropical parkland golf across two courses shared between Heritage Awali and Heritage Le Telfair resorts. The layout winds through native forest, wetlands, and sugarcane with the Bel Ombre mountains visible inland and the Indian Ocean visible from the most elevated points. The 18th hole on the principal course has a dramatic elevated tee with ocean views. Designed by Peter Matkovich. Walking the course (permitted on both) gives a different experience from most island layouts — the terrain is undulating rather than flat, which is unusual for Mauritius. The Heritage Clubhouse is among the best equipped on the island, with club fitting and a short-game practice facility.

4
Tamarina Golf Club
Tamarin, West Coast · 18 holes
West Coast 18 holes Mountain & valley Public (advance booking)

Tamarina occupies the most dramatic inland setting of any course on the island. Cut through the Black River Gorges foothills on the west coast, the layout plays across a valley with views of the Rempart and Corps de Garde mountains. It is the course most accessible to visitors staying in Flic en Flac or Le Morne who don't want to travel to the east or south coast. The terrain demands both length and creativity — fairways drop steeply on several holes and the course plays significantly longer than its yardage suggests because of elevation changes. Par 72. Buggy included in green fees; walking not permitted.

5
Mont Choisy Le Golf
Grand Baie area, North Coast · 18 holes
North Coast 18 holes Links-inspired oceanfront Public (advance booking)

The most accessible course for golfers staying in Grand Baie, Grand Gaube, or Cap Malheureux. Mont Choisy Le Golf is a links-inspired layout running alongside the north-coast lagoon with ocean views on the outward nine. The course is flatter and shorter than Constance or Anahita but plays tougher than it looks when the north-east trade wind is up — a common condition on the exposed north coast from June to August. It functions as the area's semi-public facility: advance booking is straightforward and walk-on rates are the most affordable on the island. A good choice for a quick morning round mid-holiday without committing to a full-day south or east coast excursion.

6
Avalon Golf Estate
Cascavelle, South-West · 18 holes
South-West 18 holes Parkland estate Public (advance booking)

A more recent addition to the island's golf offer, Avalon sits in the Cascavelle hills between the west coast and the south. The parkland layout is maintained to a high standard and offers a quieter, less crowded alternative to the major resort courses. Primarily used by Mauritius residents and golfers staying in the Flic en Flac/Le Morne corridor who don't want to make the longer drive to Heritage or Constance. Not in the same tier as the top four courses, but well-maintained, fairly priced, and a solid choice when the main courses are fully booked.

When to Play Golf in Mauritius

The island is playable year-round but the dry season (May–October) is clearly the better golf window. Morning tee times are the universal recommendation regardless of season.

May — October
Best season

Dry, cooler mornings. Low humidity. Consistent conditions. Book tee times 2–3 days ahead in June–August. Trade winds build afternoon; go early.

November & April
Shoulder season

Transitional months. Mornings are good; afternoon showers more likely. Fewer tourists on the course. Rates lower at most non-resort courses.

December — March
Wet season

Afternoon thunderstorms common; cyclone season peaks January–February. Mornings are still playable but round completion less reliable. Courses stay open; carry a jacket.

Trade winds and tee time strategy

The south-east trade wind builds from late morning on exposed courses — particularly The Links at Constance, the oceanfront holes at Anahita, and Mont Choisy. On these courses, book the first tee time available (typically 7am or 7:30am). The difference between a 7am and a 10am tee time on a windy June day can be 3–4 clubs on exposed holes. Parkland courses like The Legend at Constance, the interior holes at Heritage, and Tamarina are significantly less affected.

Green Fees & Practical Information

Handicap requirements

Most courses in Mauritius require a valid handicap certificate for unaccompanied play — typically a maximum of 28 for men and 36 for women. A screenshot from your national golf union app (Golf England, Golf Ireland, USGA GHIN, etc.) is accepted. Resort courses (Anahita, Heritage, Constance) apply this more strictly than semi-public tracks. If you don't have a handicap, book a round with a PGA professional — all major courses can arrange this.

Equipment hire

All six courses offer club hire — sets are typically Callaway, TaylorMade, or Titleist and are in good condition. Electric trolleys and buggies are available. Shoe hire is possible but less reliable; bring your own if you're particular about fit. Golf attire (collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts) is required; jeans and training shoes are not permitted.

📅
Book tee times in advance

Resort courses (Constance, Anahita, Heritage) fill up quickly in June–August and December. Book 3–5 days ahead at minimum. Semi-public courses (Mont Choisy, Tamarina) are more flexible but still benefit from 24-hour advance booking.

🌅
Tee off before 9am

The practical rule on all exposed courses. The first 2–3 hours of play are in the calmest conditions. After 10am on the east coast in dry season, the trade wind adds 2–3 clubs of difficulty on exposed holes.

🧴
Sun protection is critical

The tropical sun is intense even in the dry season. High-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and a long-sleeve UV shirt are more than comfort items — 4 hours in Mauritius sun without protection will ruin the following days. Most pro shops sell sunscreen.

💧
Carry extra water

Drink stations are spaced across all major courses but 18 holes at 30°C requires more water than temperate-climate golfers are used to. Most resort buggies include a cooler; fill it before you leave the clubhouse. Dehydration affects concentration well before thirst appears.

📦
Travel with your clubs?

Most airlines charge a golf bag as an oversized sports item (€30–€60 each way). Given quality hire sets are available at all courses, leaving clubs at home and hiring on arrival is worth considering for short trips. Bring your own if you're playing 5+ rounds and are particular about your equipment.

🏨
Stay-and-play packages

Constance Belle Mare Plage, Heritage Awali, and Four Seasons Anahita all offer stay-and-play golf packages that include unlimited or discounted rounds. For a 5–7 night trip primarily focused on golf, these packages consistently work out cheaper than paying individual green fees each day.

Best Golf Resorts in Mauritius

These three hotels have golf either on-site or directly adjacent — meaning your round starts from the resort, not a 30-minute drive away. All have independently high editorial scores for the wider resort experience.

Constance Belle Mare Plage
5-star Belle Mare East Coast 36 holes on-site Golf Academy
8.9/10

The island's top golf destination by total course quality. Two 18-hole championship layouts — The Links (oceanside, exposed) and The Legend (parkland, sheltered) — sit directly within the resort estate. Guests walk from their villa to the first tee via buggy path. A dedicated Golf Academy with TrackMan launch monitors and PGA professionals makes it the best choice for golfers who want to improve as well as play. The resort itself scores 8.9/10 — private beach, 9 restaurants, spa, and water sports centre — making it equally strong for non-golfing partners.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort
5-star Bel Ombre South Coast 36 holes (Heritage Golf Club) Nature Reserve
8.4/10

The only resort on the island whose name leads with golf — and it earns it. Heritage Awali sits within the Heritage Nature Reserve and guests have direct access to all 36 holes of Heritage Golf Club, which also serves neighbouring Heritage Le Telfair. The south coast location means fewer guests competing for tee times than the east coast courses, and the mountain/forest terrain creates a very different playing environment from the lagoon-side layouts elsewhere. The 18th hole's elevated tee with Indian Ocean views is one of the most dramatic finishes in the Indian Ocean. Also an exceptional spa destination for non-golfing partners.

Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita
5-star Beau Champ East Coast Ernie Els course adjacent Overwater villas
9.1/10

The highest-scored resort on the site, and the most luxurious golf base on the island. The Ernie Els-designed Anahita Golf Club wraps around the resort's east-coast lagoon estate — the course and the hotel are architecturally integrated, with several fairways running past villa gardens and the lagoon in play on 12 holes. Four Seasons guests receive priority access and preferential rates on the Anahita course. For golfers who want to combine seriously impressive golf with the Indian Ocean's best overwater villa experience, no combination on the island comes close. Non-golfing partners have a strong private beach, spa, and snorkelling directly from the villa deck.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many golf courses are there in Mauritius?
Mauritius has around eight to ten golf courses depending on how resort-only layouts are counted. The main courses open to visitors and resort guests are: Constance Belle Mare Plage (The Links + The Legend, 36 holes combined), Heritage Golf Club (36 holes, Bel Ombre), Anahita Golf Club (18 holes, Ernie Els design, Grand River South East), Tamarina Golf Club (18 holes, west coast), Mont Choisy Le Golf (18 holes, north coast), and Avalon Golf Estate (18 holes, south). Most allow non-resident play with advance booking.
What is the best golf course in Mauritius?
Constance Belle Mare Plage is widely considered the top golf destination — two championship courses (The Links and The Legend) on the east coast with sea views, immaculate conditions, and a dedicated golf academy. Anahita Golf Club (designed by Ernie Els) is the other standout, known for its lagoon setting and challenging layout. Heritage Golf Club in Bel Ombre offers 36 holes across a tropical estate with Indian Ocean views from the 18th green.
When is the best time to play golf in Mauritius?
May to October is the best time to play golf in Mauritius. The dry season brings lower humidity, cooler mornings, and more consistent conditions. Trade winds can be a factor on exposed courses (particularly the east coast) from June to August — book morning tee times before 9am to play in the calmest conditions. November to April (wet season) is playable but afternoon thunderstorms are more common.
How much does golf cost in Mauritius?
Green fees at the major courses range from €80 to €180 per round for non-hotel guests. Resort guests usually receive preferential rates or free rounds depending on their package. Equipment hire (clubs, trolley, shoes) costs €20–€40 extra. Many top hotels offer unlimited golf packages — Constance Belle Mare Plage, Heritage Awali, and Four Seasons Anahita all have stay-and-play packages that significantly reduce the per-round cost compared to walk-on rates.
Do you need a handicap to play golf in Mauritius?
Most golf courses in Mauritius require proof of handicap for unaccompanied play — typically a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for women. Your home club handicap certificate or a screenshot from your national golf union app is sufficient. Resort-linked courses (Anahita, Heritage, Constance) are stricter on this than semi-public courses like Mont Choisy or Tamarina. Beginners can book lessons and play with a professional without a handicap at most courses.
Can you play golf in Mauritius without staying at the resort?
Yes — most courses accept non-resident play with advance booking. Walk-on rates are higher than guest rates. Constance Belle Mare Plage, Tamarina Golf Club, and Mont Choisy Le Golf are the most accessible for visiting players. Anahita Golf Club and Heritage Golf Club are primarily for resort guests but accept outside visitors based on tee-time availability. Book at least 2–3 days in advance in peak season (June–August) and December.
