When Is the Best Time to Visit Mauritius?
A month-by-month guide to Mauritius weather, seasons, and what to expect — so you can plan your trip around the right conditions for beach, diving, honeymoon, or golf.
The best time to visit Mauritius is May to October, during the island's cool, dry season. Temperatures sit between 22°C and 26°C, humidity is low, rainfall is rare, and the sea is clear. This is when Mauritius is at its most pleasant for beach holidays, golf, and outdoor activities.
That said, Mauritius is a year-round destination. The island sits in the Indian Ocean at a latitude where tropical warmth is constant, and even the hotter, wetter months (November–April) can offer long stretches of sunshine. Understanding the seasons — and which coast benefits from which — is the key to choosing the right time for your trip.

Best Months: May to October
The dry season is the consensus best time to visit Mauritius, and for good reason. The south-east trade winds that blow across the island from May onwards bring cooler, drier air that makes outdoor activities genuinely comfortable. Sunsets are vivid, skies are reliably blue, and the risk of disruption from rain or cyclones is essentially zero.
July and August are the absolute peak of the season — the most settled weather and the busiest period on the island. European summer holidays bring a surge of visitors, so hotels fill up and prices climb. Book well in advance if you're targeting these months.
September and October are arguably the best value window in the dry season. Weather remains excellent, the island is quieter after the summer rush, and hotel rates drop by 15–30% compared to July. Sea temperatures begin to rise again from around 24°C in September, making this a strong choice for divers and snorkellers as well as beach travellers.
May and June mark the start of the dry season. Temperatures dip to their coolest — around 22°C overnight — which some visitors find refreshing, though it is still warm enough to swim comfortably. This period is particularly popular for golfers, hikers, and those planning to explore the island's interior.
When to Avoid: January to March
Cyclone season runs from November to April, with peak risk concentrated in January, February, and March. Mauritius does not experience a cyclone every year, but the Indian Ocean basin does generate storms that can affect the island with little warning. A direct hit brings violent winds, heavy flooding, and days of disruption; even a nearby cyclone can ruin a week of a two-week holiday with persistent heavy rain and rough seas.
If you do visit in the wet season, the risk is manageable — but purchase comprehensive travel insurance and monitor weather forecasts closely. Direct flights may be delayed or cancelled, and resort operations can be curtailed during storm conditions.
Best Time by Activity
Beach holidays
May to October on either coast. The lagoons are clear, the sand is wind-sculpted and pristine, and UV levels are lower than in the summer months. The east coast (Belle Mare, Beau Champ) and the north (Grand Baie, Cap Malheureux) are particularly beautiful in the dry season.
Scuba diving and snorkelling
Diving is possible year-round in Mauritius, but visibility varies by season and coast. The west coast (Flic en Flac, Le Morne) offers its best diving from October to March, when the sea is calmer and visibility can exceed 30 metres. The east coast is at its clearest from May to October. Whale sharks are occasionally sighted near Beau Champ and Blue Bay between October and November.
Honeymoon
May to October gives the most reliable weather, which matters enormously when you are on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. September and October are a particularly strong honeymoon window — warm, dry, quieter than peak summer, and at some of the best hotel rates of the year. December is another popular choice for its festive atmosphere and longer days, though cyclone risk is beginning to build from mid-November.
Golf
May to October is golf season in Mauritius. Courses are in their best condition, mornings are cool, and afternoon rounds are pleasant rather than punishing. Heritage Awali, Anahita Golf & Spa Resort, and the Four Seasons at Anahita all have championship courses that are genuinely enjoyable in the dry-season conditions.
East Coast vs West Coast: Which Season Suits Which Side?
One of the most useful planning insights for Mauritius is that the two coasts have opposite weather patterns, because the island is large enough to create a rain shadow effect.
- East coast (Belle Mare, Beau Champ, Trou d'Eau Douce) — sheltered and calm during the hot season (November–April), more exposed to the south-east trade winds in the dry season (May–October). Still very good in the dry season, but the sea can be choppier.
- West and south-west coast (Flic en Flac, Le Morne, Bel Ombre) — sheltered by the mountains from the trade winds in the dry season. This coast is at its absolute best from May to October: flat calm seas, clear water, and reliable sunshine.
If you are visiting in the wet season (November–April), prefer an east-coast or north-coast resort. If you are visiting in the dry season (May–October), the west and south-west coast beaches are superb.
